Profile of Statistics Department

About the Department:

The Department of Statistics was established in 1991. Mr. Biman Ch. Baruah was the department's founder. The Department offers B.Sc Statistics (Hons) CBCS and NEP Courses under Dibrugarh University. The Department has a strength of 2 experienced Faculty members with 1 Ph.D and 1 pursuing Ph.D.

              “STATISTIKA”, the Wall Magazine of the Department of Statistics is released annually on 5th September on the occasion of Teachers’ Day commemorating the birth anniversary of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. The wall magazine is a students’ initiative, where they can post their articles, poems, drawings and other such compositions to share with each other. “STATISTIKA” is in a form of collage giving a message.

Best Practices of the Department:

  • The faculties of the Department of Statistics always train their final semester students for PG Entrance Examination of various State Universities.
  • The Department organizes students’ seminars from time to time to enhance their subject skills, knowledge, communication skills, and personality development. 
  • From the year 2020 onwards the Department had introduced a scheme titled- ‘OAOB: One Alumnus One Book’ Scheme. Education is a continuous learning process. Students in the department require books for learning purpose. There is a provision in the Department to lend books to economically poor students for the entire Semester.
  • The faculties of the Department of Statistics help the economically backward students by providing not only book but other stationaries too including scientific calculator which is an essential for all Statistics students in regular manner.
  • The students of Statistics have to participate in a research project in three-year undergraduate course, through which he/she becomes professionally more skilled in statistical computing using computer software as well as data collection, analyzing data etc.

  • To enrich students’ overall knowledge about the history and geography of North East India, as well as to introduce them to the ethnicity, culture, and other societal issues of various ethnic group of North Eastern part of India, the department organizes self-financed day-long educational tours to a nearby place of interest every year.
  • The students of the Department of Statistics organize Freshman social functions for newcomers, a Farewell program for the final semester outgoing students and a Teacher’s Day celebration regularly.

Mission of the Department:

  • To be a student-centric department imbibing experiential, innovative and lifelong learning skills along with addressing societal problems.
  • To promote and undertake all-inclusive research and development within the capacity of the department.
  • To inculcate career-oriented attitudes and values amongst learners.
  • To mentor aspiring students to unleash their potential, towards nation-building.

Vision of the Department:

  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and coherent understanding.
  • Express various statistical ideas clearly through data analysis.
  • Use Statistical tools and techniques effectively.
  • Correlate and compare recent developments in various branches of Statistics and Data Science.
  • Formulate research-related skills.

Future plan of the Department:

  • The Department of Statistics has a plan to publish a book on research articles based   on statistical methods and inference as well as on applied research.
  • The Department is pursuing various Govt of India’s funding agencies for research grant.
  • Increased emphasis on experiential and all –inclusion learning by organizing workshop, seminars etc.
  • The Department is communicated with Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata for a week-long Workshop on Statistical Methods for students, research scholars as well as faculties through online and is postponed to a suitable date in near future due to End Semester examinations to be held at the college.
