Profile of Economics Department

The Department of Economics was established in the year 1959.  The  Department offers B. A. & M.A. courses. The department has a strength of 5 permanent and 2 contractual faculty members .  The Department has an association,  named as Gargaon College Economic Association (GCEA).

  • Providing quality teaching and guidance to the diverse student community.
  • Providing best possible classroom environment, strong student-teacher relationship and an enhanced classroom experience.
  • Providing strong support to the students towards successful completion of degrees as well as successful career advancement and employment opportunities.

Mission of the Department

In addition to the overall mission of the college, the department has the following specific missions:

  • To provide applied knowledge of the course.
  • To enhance employability of the students by giving them regular counseling.
  • To encourage the students for developing entrepreneurial skill and self-employment.
  • To disseminate information to students regarding further higher education

Best Practices of the Department

  • The department introduced a Scholarship entitled Anuprerona, which is a joint initiative of Dr. Surajit Saikia, Dr. Nilutpal Chutia and Ankika Dutta. Under Anuprerona, poor meritorious students are provided financial help for pursuing Masters Programe in Economics.
  • The department has introduced Gaurab Gogoi Memorial Award, a one-time scholarship scheme of Rs. 3000 in memory of Late Gaurab Gogoi. The scholarship is an initiative by Dr. Surajit Saikia and is awarded to the highest scorers in Degree Final Year Examination of Economics Department of Gargaon College.
  • Anuprerona Book Bank Facility for meritorious students.
  • The faculty members regularly donate books to the department library.
  • The students of the department voluntarily dedicate at least one hour of service for ensuring a clean and green campus.
